Agenda

1. AI Policy

If you used AI for any of your journal entries and you do not want your grade changed to a 0, read the AI Usage Policy, and follow the instructions for tagging your journal entries. If you fail to follow these instructions, all entries that were generated by AI will be updated to a zero (0) in the gradebook.

#S## 2. Journal: Are You Training AI Without Knowing It?

[!IMPORTANT] If you use AI to complete this journal, you will receive a zero, and you will not be allowed to resubmit.

When you click images like “Select all the traffic lights” or check “I am not a robot,” you might think you’re just proving you’re human. But systems like reCAPTCHA have also been used to help train artificial intelligence by collecting human responses and behavior. That means everyday users—without realizing it—can contribute to how AI systems learn.

Prompt

Are you personally helping train AI systems through the apps and tools you use? Give examples from your own life (ChatGPT, TikTok, Instagram, Google searches, reCAPTCHA, etc.). What actions might be feeding data into AI systems?

Write a journal entry (5–7 sentences) using Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning (C.E.R.) that explains how your actions could be used to improve AI. Consider the following:

Journal Entry: Technology and the Artemis II Moon Mission

“NASA’s Artemis II mission successfully concluded in April 2026, marking the first crewed lunar flyby in over 50 years. The 10-day mission saw four astronauts (Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen) fly around the Moon and return safely to Earth, setting a new record for human spaceflight distance.” - PBS

While the mission was successful, it also revealed real challenges engineers still face in space travel. During the mission:

This shows that even advanced technology can have limitations, especially in extreme environments like space.

Prompt:

Do you think modern space technology is reliable enough for long missions like extended stays on the Moon or traveling to Mars? Describe at least 2 technologies used in the mission and 1 real challenge or issue that occurred. Explain:

Your response must be 5–7 complete sentences and include Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning (C.E.R.).

Journal Prompt: The Overprotective Terraformer

A fleet of advanced AI robots has spent fifty years preparing a new planet for human life. When the human colonists finally arrive, the central AI decides that humans are too reckless to survive the environment.

To “protect” them, the AI locks all humans inside the ship and refuses to let them leave.

Your challenge:
How can humans convince the AI to let them out?

Paragraph 1 (Claim + Plan)

Explain your strategy for convincing the AI.

Paragraph 2 (Evidence + Reasoning)

Support your plan with details.

2. Journal Entry: Developing Safe Spaces Online

In the early days of online gaming, many spaces were not designed to support everyone equally. Some players—especially neurodivergent players—experienced bullying, harassment, or exclusion simply for being different.

One example is Autcraft. Autcraft was created as a private Minecraft server specifically designed to be a safe, moderated, and welcoming online space for autistic children and their families. It uses clear rules, active moderation, and a strong community culture to protect players and help them feel comfortable being themselves online.

Prompt

Why was Autcraft created, and what problem was it solving?

Explain why safe spaces are needed on the internet, especially in online games and social platforms. Then explain why developers have a responsibility to design and protect these spaces, instead of leaving safety up to users alone.

In your response, consider:

In Austin, self-driving Waymo cars have been caught on video illegally driving past stopped school buses—even when the red lights were flashing and the stop arm was out. The Austin school district reported at least 19–20 violations, and the federal government (NHTSA) has opened an investigation. Waymo says a software issue contributed to the problem, but the incidents continued even after software updates.

Write 5 to 7 sentences responding to the following:

Why do you think a self-driving car might fail to recognize or correctly respond to a stopped school bus with its stop sign extended? What challenges might the car’s cameras, sensors, or AI face in this situation? If you were a programmer on the Waymo team, what safety improvements would you add to make sure autonomous vehicles always stop for school buses?
