Day 1: Percents in everyday decisions

Learn and try together · Page 1 of 2

Name __________________________ Class __________ Date __________

Retrieval · 3 minutes

W1. Write 3/4 as a decimal.

W2. Find 10% of 80.

Mini-lesson · 7 minutes

Percent means per hundred: 18% = 18/100 = 0.18. For a percent of a quantity, multiply the whole by the decimal rate.

A discount subtracts from the original price. A tax adds to the price. A 20% discount leaves 80% of the original price.

Percent change = (amount of change ÷ original amount) × 100%. Identify whether it is an increase or a decrease. When money is requested, round only the final answer to cents.

A $64 hoodie is discounted 25%. Find the savings and sale price.

  1. Savings = 0.25 × 64 = $16.
  2. Sale price = 64 − 16 = $48.
  3. Check: paying 75% gives 0.75 × 64 = $48.

A price rises from $60 to $69. What is the percent increase?

  1. Change = 69 − 60 = $9.
  2. Compare with the original: 9 ÷ 60 = 0.15.
  3. The price increased 15%, not 9%.

Guided practice · Start the 12-minute practice block

G1. Find 15% of 60.

Name __________________________ Class __________ Date __________

Retrieval · 3 minutes

W1. Evaluate 6 − (−4).

W2. Evaluate 3(x + 2) when x = 4.

Mini-lesson · 7 minutes

An equation states that two expressions are equal. Keep them equal by applying the same operation to both sides.

Simplify each side, distribute when needed, collect variable terms, then use inverse operations to isolate the variable. Keep negative signs attached to their terms.

Substitute the result into the original equation. In a word problem, label the unknown and include any starting fee before the per-unit charge.

Solve 4x − 3 = 21.

  1. Add 3 to both sides: 4x = 24.
  2. Divide both sides by 4: x = 6.
  3. Check: 4(6) − 3 = 21.

Solve 3(x + 2) = 2x + 11.

  1. Distribute: 3x + 6 = 2x + 11.
  2. Subtract 2x and then 6: x = 5.
  3. Check: 3(5 + 2) = 21 and 2(5) + 11 = 21.

Day 3: Connect slope, tables, and equations

Learn and try together · Page 1 of 2

Name __________________________ Class __________ Date __________

Retrieval · 3 minutes

W1. Find the slope through (2, 5) and (6, 13).

W2. What is the y-intercept of y = 2x + 7?

Mini-lesson · 7 minutes

Slope m = change in y ÷ change in x = (y₂ − y₁)/(x₂ − x₁). Use the same point order in the numerator and denominator.

In y = mx + b, m is the rate and b is the value of y at x = 0. A positive slope increases; a negative slope decreases.

A horizontal line has slope 0. A vertical line has no defined slope because its change in x is zero; division by zero is undefined.

Find slope through (1, 5) and (4, 14).

  1. Change in y: 14 − 5 = 9. Change in x: 4 − 1 = 3.
  2. Slope = 9 ÷ 3 = 3.
  3. Use (1, 5): 5 = 3(1) + b, so b = 2 and y = 3x + 2.

A rental costs C = 4h + 12 dollars for h hours. Interpret the model and find the cost for 3 hours.

  1. The rate is $4 per hour. The initial charge is $12.
  2. For h = 3, C = 4(3) + 12 = $24.
  3. The initial charge is not the hourly rate.

Day 4: Build and compare linear models

Learn and try together · Page 1 of 2

Name __________________________ Class __________ Date __________

Retrieval · 3 minutes

W1. Evaluate 12 + 3h at h = 2.

W2. Solve 5x = 30.

Mini-lesson · 7 minutes

A simple cost model is cost = starting fee + rate × quantity. Compare the same input and units for both plans.

To find when plans cost the same, set their expressions equal and solve. This is the intersection of two linear models.

The crossover tells you where costs are equal. To choose a cheaper plan for a particular situation, evaluate both models at that input.

Plan A costs $10 + $4h; Plan B costs $4 + $6h. At how many hours h are costs equal?

  1. Set 10 + 4h = 4 + 6h. Subtract 4h and then 4: 6 = 2h.
  2. h = 3 hours. Both plans cost $22 at h = 3.
  3. At 1 hour, A costs $14 and B costs $10; at 5 hours, A costs $30 and B costs $34.

For A = 12 + 3h and B = 6 + 5h, compare the costs at h = 4.

  1. A = 12 + 3(4) = $24.
  2. B = 6 + 5(4) = $26.
  3. Plan A is $2 cheaper for 4 hours.

Guided practice · Start the 12-minute practice block

G2. For those same plans, which is cheaper at h = 2: A or B?
